When most people think MINI, they think British. And that’s fair. The brand has deep roots in the UK. But today, MINIs are built in more than one place. The production is split across three countries—each focused on different models. For Canadian MINI fans, it’s helpful to know where your MINI comes from and what changes are coming soon.

Oxford Still Feels Like Home

The heart of MINI production is in Oxford, England. This is where most of the MINIs you see on Edmonton roads start their life. The 3-Door Hatch, 5-Door Hatch, and Convertible are all built here. The plant has been making MINIs for years and is now getting even more upgrades. Starting in 2026, Oxford will also begin building MINI electric models like the next-gen J01 Cooper EV and the new J05 Aceman. So the British MINI spirit is staying strong—even as it goes electric.

Germany Steps In for the Big Stuff

Not all MINIs are tiny. The Countryman is MINI’s largest model, and it’s now being made in Germany. Built at BMW’s Leipzig plant, it’s made right alongside the BMW X1 and X2. Both the gas and electric versions of the Countryman roll off the line here. If you’ve been eyeing a bigger MINI with more room for family or gear, there’s a good chance it was made in Germany.

China for the New Electric Minis

MINI has also partnered with Great Wall Motor in China to build some of its newest electric vehicles. The J01 Cooper EV and J05 Aceman EV are being made there now. But these models are expected to shift production to the UK by 2026 for most global markets. The Chinese plant will likely focus on building for the Asian region moving forward. So if you're buying in Canada, your future electric MINI will likely come from the UK, not China.
