MINIs have been racing vehicles since their inception over five decades ago. John Cooper originally modified these cars to not only compete, but strive on the international racing circuit. MINIs feel right at home on the race track as they do driving around the city. A racing passion still exists within all of us at MINI Edmonton and we’re proud to see the vehicles we sell take on such a prominent position in some of the biggest rally races around the world. Join us as we take a look at some of the rally championships close by and far away that feature MINIs.
Canadian Touring Car Championship
The Canadian Touring Car Championship is Canada’s only professional road race series. Cars compete in three different classes: the Touring Class is an entry level for basic modified cars, the Super Touring Class for advanced modified cars and the GT Sport Class for high performance sports cars. MINI Canada offers a Contingency Award Program that rewards our homegrown talent for their success in Canadian tournament with a generous payout for first, second and third finishes.
On the east coast of our country sits one of the most stunning rally race tournaments across the world. This 1,600 km course offers drivers a unique view of Newfoundland as it transitions between high-speed pavement sections with off-road portions. It is the first tarmac rally to be raced in North America. In the 2017 competition, MINI drivers finished first and second in the illustrious race. Check out the race for yourself this year when it gets underway from September 13th–22nd.
Dakar Rally Championship
The Dakar Rally Championship is a rigorous off-road race that takes racers through the rugged South American terrain. This rally has been held in South America since 2009, with previous races hosted in Europe and Africa from 1979 to 2007. This two week race covers 9,000 km of track that is only for expert drivers. From deserts to wetlands to mountains, there’s hardly a piece of environment that racers won’t speed over on their quest to win the rally. MINI teams took home victories in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015!
The MINI Challenge is a touring series of tournaments putting MINIs against each other on a grueling track. The 2018 edition is the 17th time this racing series has been held in the UK. It includes 49 races over 13 weekends featuring four different classes of MINI vehicles. The most popular vehicles are John Cooper Works MINIs outfitted with nitron, a modified powertrain and improved gearbox. The races are currently on-going and will continue to run throughout the summer.
Monte Carlo Rally
Throw it back to where MINI rally cars first got their start and dominated the track. MINI blasted onto the world racing scene at the Monte Carlo Rally in the 1960s. John Cooper’s esteemed MINI utilized its racing-tuned engine, superior brakes and gearbox to take home wins in 1964, 1965 and 1967. Today, this race still exists and provides a formidable challenge for whoever enters.
